Introduction to My Curriculum Project: A Guide for Teaching English in South Korea

As an experienced English teacher, I’ve developed a strong passion for creating meaningful learning experiences. My interest in curriculum design led me to create The Magpie’s Guide to Teaching English in South Korea—a two-part micro-learning course that helps adults prepare for teaching abroad through practical tips, cultural insights, and accessible content.

I created this course using Storyboard, and while I was unable to upload it directly, I made a video walkthrough to showcase its key components. The project highlights my ability to design learner-centered, culturally relevant instruction using structured content, visual aids, and multimedia.

This curriculum reflects my strengths in instructional design, content creation, and building engaging, informative learning tools for diverse audiences.

Part One: Introduction to South Korea – Eligibility, Requirements, and School Comparison

This section provides a comprehensive overview of what it’s like to teach English in South Korea, including crucial information on eligibility and the requirements to become an English teacher. It also offers a detailed comparison between teaching in public schools and hagwons (private academies), highlighting the key differences in work environment, student demographics, expectations, and benefits. This section serves as a foundation for teachers to understand the landscape of teaching English in South Korea before they begin the application process.

Part Two: Applying to Schools, Interview Process, and Necessary Documents

In this section, I guide educators through the essential steps of applying to schools in South Korea. I cover the application process in detail, including tips for navigating job boards, writing effective resumes, and crafting a standout cover letter. Additionally, I provide an overview of the interview process and the documents required for securing a teaching position, such as teaching certificates, criminal background checks, and medical documentation. The goal of this section is to equip prospective teachers with the knowledge and tools needed to confidently apply for jobs and prepare for a successful interview.
